• Peptide of the Week: BPC-157

If you’ve spent any time researching peptides, you’ve run into BPC-157. It’s the most talked-about compound in the space — and also one of the most commonly oversimplified.

    What it is

BPC-157 (Body Protection Compound-157) is a synthetic pentadecapeptide — a chain of 15 amino acids — derived from a protective protein naturally found in human gastric juice. That origin is part of why it’s drawn so much research interest: the native protein appears to play a role in protecting and repairing the stomach lining, and researchers have spent years investigating whether a stable, synthetic version could extend that protective effect elsewhere in the body.

    What researchers study

    • Tissue repair mechanisms in tendons, ligaments, and muscle in animal models
    • Angiogenesis (new blood vessel formation) as a proposed pathway behind its repair effects
    • Gut barrier integrity and gastrointestinal protection — its original research context
    • Interaction with growth factor signaling pathways involved in wound healing
    • These findings are drawn from Chang et al. (2011, Journal of Applied Physiology), Seiwerth et al. (2021, Frontiers in Pharmacology), and Sikiric et al. (2003, Inflammopharmacology) — full citation trail on our [Research Index].

Where the regulatory conversation stands right now

This is worth being direct about, since it changes week to week. BPC-157 has no FDA-approved drug application and never has — that’s not new. What’s new: it spent 2023–2026 in the FDA’s Category 2 (identified safety concern) for compounding pharmacies, was removed from that category in April 2026, and was reviewed again by the FDA’s advisory committee just this past July for possible inclusion on the permitted compounding list. As of today, that decision hasn’t been finalized. BPC-157 sits in a genuine in-between: no longer flagged as an active concern, not yet formally cleared either. We’ll update this if that changes.

    Where to go next

BPC-157 shows up across three of our topic guides, each covering a different angle of the research: [Building Muscle], [Longevity], and [Immunity]. Start with [What Are Peptides?] if you’re new here.
