Peptide compounds are fragile molecules. Understanding how they behave under different storage and handling conditions is a core part of research methodology — errors in handling can degrade a compound before any study protocol is even run.

Temperature sensitivity

Most research peptides are shipped and stored lyophilized (freeze-dried) to maximize shelf stability. In lyophilized form, most compounds remain stable at standard refrigeration temperatures (2–8°C) for extended periods, and some tolerate room-temperature storage for shorter windows. Once a peptide is reconstituted into solution, however, stability windows shorten significantly — researchers typically move reconstituted solutions to refrigerated or frozen storage immediately and work within much shorter usage windows than the lyophilized form allows.

Light and oxidation sensitivity

Many peptide compounds, particularly those with certain amino acid residues (e.g., methionine, cysteine, tryptophan), are prone to oxidative degradation when exposed to light or air. Standard lab practice stores compounds in amber or foil-wrapped containers and minimizes freeze-thaw cycles, since repeated temperature cycling accelerates degradation.
